Public Transit Advisory Committee

Application for Appointment

The Metropolitan Transit Commission is now accepting applications to the new Public Transit Advisory Committee.

The deadline for applications is Friday, January 3, 2025.

The Public Transit Advisory Committee (PTAC) was established by the Metropolitan Transit Commission (MTC) beginning January 1, 2025 through an interlocal agreement between the City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County and the six towns.  PTAC replaces the Citizens Transit Advisory Group (CTAG) and the Transit Services Advisory Committee (TSAC).

Eligibility:

  • Applicants should live within Mecklenburg County jurisdiction. 
  • A publicly elected office holder shall not serve on PTAC. 
  • All appointees are subject to the MTC’s Rules of Procedure
  • Consideration will be give to riders of public transit.

Qualifications:

Board members should be, to the extent possible, representative of:  

  • Different geographic areas of Mecklenburg County;
  • Different incomes, races and ethnicities, abilities and disabilities, identities, and ages;
  • Different transit rider groups (persons with disabilities, senior and school age riders, commuters, low-income riders);
  • Travelers of different modes of public transportation (e.g., local bus, express bus, light rail, micro-transit, streetcar, and paratransit);
  • Mecklenburg County residents with an interest in improving transit conditions within the county and region, and have experience with urban transit issues;
  • Transit-related organizations/clubs; and,
  • Schools, business, and neighborhood organizations that particularly depend on the City's public transportation system.
 

Committee Information

PTAC Responsibilities:

  • Reviewing the CATS CEO’s proposed operating programs and five-year capital programs
  • Reviewing transit policies
  • Serving as an initial forum for suggestions and complaints concerning fares, routes, and schedules, and
  • Making recommendations to the MTC regarding these matters.
  • PTAC shall also be responsible for providing such other advisory functions as directed by the MTC.

Committee Members (15)*:

  • One (1) Co-Chair appointed by the Mayor of the City of Charlotte
  • One (1) Co-Chair appointed by the Chairperson of the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners
  • Two (2) members appointed by Charlotte City Council
  • Two (2) members appointed by the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners
  • One (1) member appointed by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education
  • One (1) member appointed by the Town of Cornelius
  • One (1) member appointed by the Town of Davidson
  • One (1) member appointed by the Town of Huntersville
  • One (1) member appointed by the Town of Matthews
  • One (1) member appointed by the Town of Mint Hill
  • One (1) member appointed by the Town of Pineville
  • One(1) at-large member appointed by the MTC that shall be a person with a disability*
  • One (1) at-large member appointed by the MTC that shall be a fixed route service rider*

* At the November 20, 2024 meeting, the MTC voted to add the two at-large members to PTAC.

Meetings:

  • Meetings will be scheduled the second Wednesday of each month at 4:00 p.m. at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center. 
  • The average monthly time commitment is two to four hours.

Statement to Applicants:

You will be notified if nominated and/or appointed. Applications remain active for one year. All members are required to attend at least 65% of the regular and special meetings of the body held in any one calendar year. Please take time to review the attendance policy and other rules pertaining to PTAC.

Applications are subject to the N.C. Public Records Law (NCGS 132-1) and may be released upon request.
