Crowns of Enterprise Awards Planning Committee

The Crowns of Enterprise Awards honor small businesses and entrepreneurs that demonstrate exemplary leadership and sound business strategies.

Mecklenburg County and the City of Charlotte established the awards in 2011 to recognize the hard work of local small businesses and the economic impact they have on the community. The Crowns of Enterprise Awards program also nurtures relationships among small businesses, officials and government agencies.

During the awards ceremony in May, the County and City recognize an outstanding business in each of six categories.

Please review the award descriptions and answer the questions below to nominate a firm or individual for a Crowns of Enterprise Award to recognize excellent service to the City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County. Please note, self-nominations are welcome.

Innovation Catalyst Award 

This award is presented to an individual whose vision, innovation, and leadership has served as a powerful force for positive change in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg region. This individual has gone above and beyond their standard responsibilities to spark significant initiatives, challenge conventional thinking, and implement solutions that drive growth, enhance efficiency, and expand opportunities strengthening the local business ecosystem.

Enterprise Trailblazer Award

This award is presented to a business enterprise that exemplifies exceptional leadership, organizational excellence, and a forward-thinking approach to enterprise development in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg region. The award honors firms that set the standard for strategic execution, community engagement, and long-term business success.

Small Business Enterprise Leadership Award

This award is presented to a Small Business Enterprise certified by the North Carolina Department of Administration (NCSBE Certification) or the Charlotte Business Inclusion Small Business Enterprise certification that demonstrates exceptional performance, operational strength, and measurable contributions to economic development in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg region. The honoree exemplifies excellence in service delivery, business growth, community engagement, and partnership development.

Industry Stewardship Award

This award is presented to a firm that models responsible, forward-thinking stewardship within the contracting and business community. The recipient champions equitable opportunity fosters inclusive and sustainable business practices and actively supports the growth and development of diverse suppliers and subcontractors. Through leadership, advocacy, and consistent engagement, this firm helps strengthen the industry as a whole ensuring that progress is shared, opportunities are accessible, and the path forward is built with collaboration and accountability at its core.

Young Entrepreneur Award (Age 10-25)

This award is presented to an exceptional young business owner who demonstrates outstanding vision, innovation, and leadership. The recipient has successfully launched or grown a business, shown resilience in overcoming challenges, and serves as an inspiration to other emerging entrepreneurs. This award celebrates the next generation of business leaders shaping the future of our community.

Community and Economic Impact Award
This award is presented to a business or individual that champions empowerment, collaboration, and community growth. The honoree demonstrates a deep commitment to supporting people from all backgrounds and strengthening the community through innovative and impactful initiatives.

General Business Overview:

In a minimum of two paragraphs​, provide a brief history and description of the firm or individual (i.e. core values, goals, mission, vision, etc.).

Economic Development:

In a minimum of two paragraphs​, describe how the nominated firm or individual drives economic development in the Charlotte - Mecklenburg region (i.e. workforce contribution, efforts that stimulate and support growth and expansion, innovative practices that stimulate and foster revitalization or redevelopment).

Equitable and Community Initiatives:

Provide 1-2 paragraphs describing how the nominated firm or individual actively embraces, advances, and engages in equitable and community initiatives. Explain how they promote fair and inclusive opportunities, support strong community connections, and create environments where people of all backgrounds feel valued and empowered. Include examples such as equity-focused education, social justice advocacy, community partnerships, or efforts that reduce barriers and strengthen diverse communities. The response should clearly demonstrate the nominee’s meaningful community impact, include data if applicable, and reflect the spirit of this award, which honors those who champion empowerment, collaboration, and community growth.
